NICHE Program Helps Local Woman Celebrate 93rd Birthday at Hudson Valley Hospital Center

Cortlandt Manor, NY - (February 10, 2012) – Marie Covais wasn’t feeling so well when she was admitted to Hudson Valley Hospital Center on Feb. 7, but now she’s singing a different tune – a birthday tune.

The Jefferson Valley resident celebrated her 93rd birthday at Hudson Valley Hospital Center on Feb. 8. The staff didn’t want her to miss her special day so they presented her with a cake and invited family members.

Marie is very active and loves to dance, bowl, knit and garden. She was so happy with her new friends at HVHC that she decided to volunteer to knit blankets for needy patients at the Hospital as part of a program at HVHC.

Suzanne Mateo, MA, BSN, RN, administrative director of nursing, said that Marie is one of many older patients who have been benefitting by a new program at the hospital called NICHE which stands for Nursing Improving Care for Healthsystems Elders. The hospital is one of 300 hospitals – and only two in Westchester and Putnam Counties - involved in the program nationwide.

To receive the prestigious designation, the hospital had to develop a program that treats older people with compassion, keeps their health from deteriorating, and works with their families to prepare patients for leaving the hospital, said Mateo, who coordinates the NICHE program.

People over 65 are the fastest growing age group in the nation, making up 12.9 percent of the population or about 1 in 8 people in the United States. By 2030, estimates are that there will be about 72.1 million older adults, according to U.S. Census data.

Marie said that staff at the hospital were great and worked with her to make sure that she follows through on healthy habits such as drinking lots of fluids to stay hydrated.

“I feel so much better,’’ she said Feb. 9 as she was getting ready to leave the hospital. “I’m very happy to be going home feeling like myself again.’’
