President's Biography

John C. Federspiel,
President & CEO

John C. Federspiel is in his 24th year as president and CEO of Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt Manor, NY, an atypical 128-bed acute care, not-for-profit facility.

Since he took the helm, Hudson Valley Hospital Center has grown from a small community hospital to a state-of-the-art facility that rivals much larger institutions in the quality of care it delivers. During his tenure, the Hospital’s annual operating budget has increased five fold to nearly $145 million.

An economic engine for the community, Hudson Valley Hospital Center employs 1,300 people and pours about $150 million into the local economy annually. The hospital just completed a $100 million renovation including a four-story, 84-bed, all-private patient tower, new, larger, state-of-the-art operating rooms and an expansion of its Emergency Department.

HVHC's Emergency Department was the first no-wait ED in the region. It serves 36,000 patients annually and is the busiest in upper Westchester and Putnam counties. It has also been designated a stroke center.

After guiding Hudson Valley Hospital Center through a financial turn-around in 1991, Mr. Federspiel was responsible for doubling the square footage of the hospital with the new addition, which included the expanded emergency services department, state-of-the-art surgical suites, including a dedicated ambulatory surgery unit, new laboratories, physical medicine, and cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation space. He opened off-site locations throughout the area to bring outpatient services and physicians offices to residents from Hopewell Junction to Croton-on-Hudson. Today, the hospital boasts the Region’s most comprehensive diagnostic imaging department with the fastest and most accurate equipment, including open MRI, PET scanning, and 64-slice CT scanning.

Now, in 2011, Mr. Federspiel is still shaping HVHC’s history by completing the second major expansion project during his tenure as CEO – a $12 million Cancer Center and Medical Office Building.

Under his tenure, Hudson Valley Hospital Center has also distinguished itself with a series of awards and recognitions. The Hospital was named as the best place to give birth in Westchester and in April 2011 was recognized by the New York State Health Commissioner for its outstanding breastfeeding support programs. It received national recognition from Press Ganey as one of the best employee satisfaction success stories; and received a Forbes® Enterprise Award for its leadership and innovative ideas. Westchester Magazine also voted the Hospital as one of the best places to work in Westchester! Under his leadership, the hospital earned the coveted Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence. HVHC is the only hospital from New York City to Albany to attain this "gold" standard in nursing care.

Mr. Federspiel has been the recipient of various honors and awards, including recognition from the Arthritis Foundation, Visiting Nurse Association of Westchester, and a variety of area chambers and civic associations.

On a personal note, he has worked diligently for the past 16 years to ensure that needy children have holiday packages to open. As founder of "Santa’s Helpers," he is responsible for helping to raise more than $285,000 to purchase gifts for more than 1,500 Westchester children and their families. He enjoys shopping and wrapping presents for the children.

Mr. Federspiel holds Diplomat Status in the American College of Health Care Executives. He has served on numerous state and county healthcare committees in several capacities over the years, including two terms as chairman of Northern Metropolitan Hospital Association (NORMET). He holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Temple University. He has three sons and resides in Cortlandt Manor, NY.
