President's Message

The Journey Continues…119 Years of Caring

John C. Federspiel, President
Hudson Valley Hospital Center’s journey of excellence includes the most expansive building project in the hospital’s history! Our commitment to the community means a promising future for health care in this region. The new patient tower with private rooms; an expanded and renovated emergency department; additional operating rooms and the construction of four new critical care patient rooms are the bricks and mortar that will be clearly visible as an architectural structure, modern in design and functional for healthcare.

We are proud to be the first Magnet Hospital in the region. This spring we celebrate our first anniversary of this designation. Magnet recognition is considered the "gold standard" for measuring quality patient care and nursing excellence. It provides the public with the ultimate benchmark for measuring the level of care they can expect to receive along with the professionalism and expertise of the nursing staff that deliver care.

Our journey of excellence is fueled by the patient experience. We have proven, through top-notch patient scores, that we are a place where our patients can receive quality care with innovative equipment and ideas right here in upper Westchester. Press Ganey has named us a winner in employee satisfaction in their 2006 Success Stories Award. Press Ganey is a nationally recognized company that partners with healthcare facilities to measure patient and employee satisfaction to improve quality of healthcare delivery. We are placed in the top 6% in employee satisfaction nationwide.

In addition to high patient and employee satisfaction scores, HVHC is the proud recipient of several awards:

In 2008 we received the Fire Starter Award from the Studer Group, a national leader in healthcare operation excellence. We are the first hospital in New York State to receive this honor.

HVHC was named a winner in the 2007 Forbes Enterprise Awards. This is a national award that is given to organizations that demonstrate outstanding business practices and innovative ideas.

HealthGrades, the national leading independent healthcare ratings organization, recognized HVHC with two awards: the Maternity Care Excellence Award and the Pulmonary Care Excellence Award.

Westchester Magazine recently named us one of the ten best places to work in Westchester.

Hudson Valley Magazine selected several nurses for the Excellence in Nursing Award in 2008.

Our diagnostic imaging department is the most comprehensive in the region with virtual colonoscopy, a less invasive way to screen for colorectal cancer. The addition of two 16-slice CAT scans, and an open MRI assures us of being the most full-service radiology center in the area. In addition, we offer five mammography machines, both digital and traditional. These services are offered in several convenient locations with weekday, weeknight and weekend hours.

Our "no-wait" ER revolutionizes the process patients are accustomed to. By moving the registration function to the bedside and creating more triage and treatment space, patients bypass the usual registration function and move through the system quickly.

Our Wellness Club in Mohegan Lake, is the only adult, medically supervised center that integrates fitness for the body, mind and spirit. Our Healthy Weight and Lifestyle Program is available at our Wellness Club to support and encourage a "better-for-you" philosophy. Nutritionists, exercise physiologists, holistic nurses, and holistic therapists optimize one-on-one care to achieve each person's individual needs and goals.

Our Women's Pavilion for Birthing is THE place for the family birthing experience. We are the only hospital offering women a full-size whirlpool in every labor room. A Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) provides specialized care for babies who are born premature or with specific health needs. Now, staff, family and friends can offer the extra support and attention baby requires close to home.

Thank you for allowing us to serve your medical needs, and for your support of our growing community hospital.
