HVHC Farmer’s Market to Hold Pumpkin Carving Demonstration with the Croton Blaze

Cortlandt Manor, NY - (September 13, 2012) – Carving a Jack-o-Lantern is a fun holiday tradition, but can cause injuries if the rules of safety are not observed.

On Tuesday, September 25 at the Hudson Valley Hospital Center Farmer’s Market off Route 202 in Cortlandt Manor, the hospital’s Center for Rehabilitation will host a fun family event to instruct parents and children on how to safely carve their Halloween Jack-o-Lantern. Staff from Historic Hudson Valley’s Great Jack-o-Lantern Blaze will work on some of the same intricate carvings that are displayed at their annual event at Van Cortlandt Manor. The Hospital will also raffle off two free tickets to the event – running weekends from October 6 through November 11 – and give away free safety carving kits to the first 100 people. The Blaze carving demonstration will be held from 3 p.m.- 4 p.m., but staff will be on hand during the entire Farmer’s Market from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to discuss safety issues.

Erin Leary, OTR/L, CHT, a Certified Hand Therapist at Hudson Valley Hospital Center, said that she and staff at the Hospital’s Center for Rehabilitation have seen too many injuries due to carving accidents and wanted to do something to educate the public.

She said parents should be careful to use the right tools when carving and to supervise children very closely. “Unfortunately, injuries sustained to the hand from carving pumpkins can be very severe,’’ she said. “While some injuries are minor cuts, others can be much more disabling, requiring surgeries that result in three to four months of rehabilitation.’’

Even if you are not interested in pumpkin carving, the Farmer’s Market at HVHC has something for everyone.
