Girl Scouts Donate Books to Kids Cancer Support Program at HVHC

Cortlandt Manor, NY - (April 8, 2013)– Children participating in the Kid 2 Kid Cancer Support program at Hudson Valley Hospital Center will never run out of reading materials thanks to a local Girl Scout troop’s generous donation.

Heart of the Hudson Girl Scout Troop 1192 of Valhalla has donated more than 100 children’s books to the Gilda’s Club of Westchester Kid 2 Kid program at Hudson Valley Hospital Center. The program – held at the hospital’s Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center on the third Thursday of each month – provides support for children 5-12 with loved ones who are diagnosed with cancer.

Girl Scout Cadets Emily Dufflemeyer and Mikayla Querfled, 8th graders at Valhalla Middle School, said they never realized the generosity of their local community until they were nearly buried in books when they asked for donations. More than 100 books were donated to the Kid 2 Kid program library. The girls said that in addition to the Gilda’s Club donation, they have delivered hundreds of books to Peekskill Head Start program.

Emily’s mom, Wendy Dufflemeyer who helped arrange for the donation along with their Troop Leader Carole Petretti, said the drive has been a very rewarding experience for the girls.

The Kid 2 Kid program is still accepting book donations, but is now seeking children’s books with content specifically relating to cancer. A list of suggested books can be found on the Hospital’s website at  For more information about donations, please call the hospital at 914-734-3794. Those interested in the Kid 2 Kid program should call Miranda Dold at Gilda’s Club at 914- 664-8844.
