At ribbon-cutting ceremony, New York State Sen. Vincent L. Leibell, HVHC CEO and President John Federspiel, HVHC VP of Administration Deborah Neuendorf, and Chairman of Radiology Maurice Poplausky, MD officially opened the state-of-the-art suite, which features digital and film technology, reflecting cutting-edge practice in mammography. A New York State grant sponsored by Sen. Leibell provided funding for the digital mammography equipment.

“This is an exciting time for Hudson Valley Hospital Center,” said Mr. Federspiel. “The mammogram is the first line of defense against breast cancer, and our patients can have an appointment within a week and a choice in the type of mammogram they get, while waiting in a private, soothing setting. We thank the senator for his generous gift.”

Senator Leibell said that Hudson Valley Hospital Center “has always been a fantastic hospital… This is an exciting time in the health arena. Americans will not only live longer, we’ll live better. The key is maintaining good health. Hudson Valley Hospital Center is a jewel in the community of hospitals in New York State.”

At Your Request Boosts Patient Satisfaction

February 2008
At first blush, the new At Your Request food service plan at Hudson Valley Hospital Center sounds more like hotel room service than a patient meal plan. That's because the innovative concept enables our patients to have their meals cooked to order and delivered when they want them. Patients can order food from their in-room "Room Service Dining" menu anytime between 6:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. and have it prepared fresh to order by one of our chefs and delivered within 45 minutes. Call it the ultimate in customer service.

"We are always trying to make our patients' hospital stay as comfortable as possible, and At Your Request is a step in that direction," says John C. Federspiel, president of HVHC. "When patients enter a hospital, they often feel out of control. At Your Request gives them control over their food, which ultimately makes for happier patients."

Patients can order as much or as little as they want, unless under dietary restrictions for medical reasons. All orders are monitored and reviewed to be certain that patients are eating and following their nutrition plans. So, if it's a cup of coffee for breakfast, it's fine. If they prefer a Belgian Waffle or ham and cheeses omelet, that's possible, too. If a patient has to have a test during typical lunch hours, ordering lunch later, say at 3 p.m., will not be a problem. The patient simply calls down to the kitchen, and within 45 minutes, his food will be delivered.

"The At Your Request slogan is 'What you want, when you want it,' which summarizes the concept beautifully," says Buford Fay, HVHC director of Food and Nutrition Services, and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America (CIA).

The food is better than standard hospital fare because the majority of it is freshly made. At Your Request is under the direction of Fay, and run by Sodexho, the leading food and facilities management services company in North America. Fay works closely with HVHC's executive chef, Matt Siebel, another CIA graduate, who is working toward his Certified Master Chef accreditation, and Kimberly Garay, a graduate of Johnson & Wales University.

"Three experienced, professionally trained chefs in one hospital kitchen means the best food possible for our patients," Fay said. "And yes, we eat the food ourselves."
