Being around babies and young children most of their waking hours, the Northeast Doulas - Randy Patterson, Debbie Aglietti and Lauren Schwarzfeld, recognized that even some of the most basic parenting needs were not being met in our community, that is the lack of diapers. They brought to our attention the fact that surprisingly diapers cannot be paid for with food stamps and that many families have to choose between food and diapers. Its not something that most of us think about, but it is a serious problem for moms and babies. They came to the rescue this past weekend when on June 1 they celebrated their 10th anniversary with a 5 and 10 K run and diaper drive at FDR Park in Yorktown. We at Hudson Valley Hospital Center were proud to be the title sponsors of the event. In addition to providing a great day of fun for all, they collected thousands of diapers for the Westchester Coalition for the Hungry and Homeless, who will distribute them as part of a diaper bank they are creating.
