Hudson Valley Hospital Center and Entergy Conduct Emergency Drill
Entergy, hospital staff and local responders treat injured worker in mock radiation scenario
Cortlandt Manor – (Sept. 30, 2010) - Hudson Valley Hospital Center (HVHC) staff donned protective gowns and practiced taking radiation readings today as part of an emergency training drill conducted with Entergy.
More than 50 people including Hospital staff – nurses, physicians, members of the radiology, security, and environmental services staffs – as well as members of Entergy’s Radiation Protection team, Verplanck Fire Department Ambulance and Cortlandt Peekskill Regional Paramedics participated in the drill.
The annual exercise helps train Hospital staff on how to receive, treat and decontaminate patients who may have been involved in a radiation accident. The Hospital and Entergy recognize the importance of being prepared to ensure smooth operation in dealing with real emergencies.
On Sept. 30, HVHC staff treated Entergy employee Bruce Petrillo who posed as worker exposed to radiation after an accident in which he slipped and fell and tore the sleeve of his protective clothing. Supervising the drill for Entergy were Senior Emergency Planner Antonino Iraola and Radiation Protective Technician Jerry Tully.
Entergy also presented a donation to the Hospital, as a thank you for its work with emergency preparedness.
