Let the Wrapping Begin! Hudson Valley Hospital Makes Wishes Come True for Children in Need
Cortlandt Manor, NY - (December 21, 2011) – Santa’s Helpers at Hudson Valley Hospital Center wrapped mountains of presents to make wishes come true for local children and their families.
In an annual tradition, hospital staff and community volunteers including local Girl Scouts wrapped more than 800 gifts that were donated to local social services agencies and delivered to families in need. Pajamas and books, dolls, trucks, musical instruments and art supplies, boots, socks and tons of toys, clothing and other gifts were packaged in a few short hours.
This year – the 16th year of Santa’s Helpers - the Hospital is spent $125 per child on 103 children in addition to donations made by local companies.
Danny’s Cycle in Mohegan Lake donated a new bicycle to grant the wish of an 11-year-old boy who lives in a group home. Freight Liquidators granted the wish of a 5-year-old girl who wanted her first real bed and hospital staff bought all the linens. The company also donated teddy bears for all the children.
Sue Lepore, facilitator of the program in the administration office at HVHC, has the job of sorting through letters containing the wish lists of needy children and their families. She then assigns gift shopping to Hospital employees and other volunteers.
“We had so many people come forward and volunteer to help this year,’’ said Lepore. “These children ask for so little. We try to make this a great holiday by giving them more than they request.’’
The Hospital’s Santa’s Helper committee began raising funds back in July. They sold raffles and employees paid $10 each for the privilege of wearing jeans to work on two Fridays. On December 14, the hospital held a “Milk and Cookies for Santa” fundraiser and the hospital also received generous donations from people in the community.
