Hudson Valley Hospital Center Holds 2nd Annual Cancer Survivor Event on June 8

Cortlandt Manor, NY - (June 4, 2013) – As part of a national month honoring cancer survivors, the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center at Hudson Valley Hospital Center will hold a special event on June 8 for cancer survivors and their families.

The celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the courtyard off the hospital’s main lobby will feature a day of music and fun for all ages including a luncheon, children’s activities and music by a local band. It is open to all cancer survivors, not just HVHC patients.

Also on exhibit will be the artworks of cancer survivors provided by Lilly Oncology as part of itsOn Canvastravelling art exhibition. The art exhibit, which tours nationwide, showcases select pieces of art from the 2012 Lilly Oncology On Canvas competition. Themes range from fear and hope, to loss and survival, to isolation and the embrace of family and friends.

Nicholas Nicastro, whose Peekskill band will be playing at the event, said his group will be performing classic rock and R&B. He added that they recently reunited and will be playing again for the first time on Saturday.

Nicastro, who lost his father to cancer May 7, said that he is donating his services as a thank you to the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center and in memory of his father, also Nicholas. He praised the cancer center’s entire staff for the compassionate treatment they provided his father.

“I can’t say enough good things about Dr. (Asim) Aijaz and his staff. Everyone from the front desk staff on made his life so much easier these past two years,’’ said Nicastro. “We even joked about how much he looked forward to going to chemo. They are just an awesome group of people. To be able to have this quality of treatment in my backyard is amazing.’’

Anne Campbell-Maxwell, Director of Oncology Services at the Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Cancer Center, said she hopes that Saturday’s event will provide cancer survivors a chance to talk about their cancer journeys. “This is an opportunity for them to connect and share these experiences with other cancer survivors, friends and family,’’ she said. “We invite the community to attend and be part of this very moving event.’’

June is National Cancer Survivors Month, a time when many hospitals and cancer support organizations hold events in solidarity with America’s 13.5 million cancer survivors. This time of recognition provides an opportunity for all people living with a history of cancer to connect with each other, celebrate milestones, and recognize the healthcare providers, family, and friends who have supported them along the way. A 'survivor' is anyone living with a history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life," according to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation.
