Hudson Valley Hospital Center Honors its Volunteers at Awards Luncheon

Cortlandt Manor, NY - (April 25, 2013) – George Taylor isn’t bashful about belting out a tune or reciting flowery poetry if it’s for a good cause. He does it weekly at Hudson Valley Hospital Center where he has enjoyed entertaining the patients every Wednesday for the past 5 years.

“Mostly I listen. I really enjoy it because the patients come from so many different walks of life. Everyone has a story to tell from the holocaust survivor to the West Pointer,’’ said George, who grew up in Scotland, but has lived in Yorktown Heights with his wife for the past 42 years.

Taylor is one of 326 volunteers who have devoted more than 30,000 hours to the Hospital in 2012. He and his fellow volunteers were honored by the Hospital on April 25 at a Volunteer Recognition Luncheon at The Harbor at Charles Point.

John C. Federspiel, President of Hudson Valley Hospital Center, thanked the volunteers for their service and stressed how important their contributions are to the Hospital.

Volunteers perform many functions at the Hospital, greeting visitors, answering phones, doing clerical work and visiting with patients. The volunteer chaplains provide spiritual support for patients and their families. Other volunteers bring in therapy dogs who visit patients on every floor. Still others answer call bells to free up nurses from non-medical responsibilities, giving them more time to spend with patients who need medical care.

The volunteer program at HVHC was formalized in the early 1960s. Volunteers range in age from teenagers to those in their 90s. More than 85 volunteers were honored at the luncheon for service ranging from 5 to more than 40 years.

“They really do an amazing job,’’ said Tonja Inlaw, Director of Volunteer Services at HVHC. “We are truly blessed to have them and appreciate all they do to keep this hospital running.’’
