Nurse Navigator

When a person is first diagnosed with cancer it can be an overwhelming and confusing time. It is difficult to know where to turn with family and friends making multiple suggestions. At HVHC's Cancer Center, a medical professional called a nurse navigator will guide the patient step by step through the process explaining options and coordinating appointments and treatment.

Cancer Protocols Determine Treatment

Cancer Care has changed dramatically in recent years. It is no longer necessary to travel long distances to get the latest in cancer care. Cancer research has provided protocols for treatment so physicians follow the same guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network no matter where the patient is treated. Unless a patient has a rare form of cancer or needs to undergo experimental treatments, they can often receive care close to home.

Quality Physicians

Cancer Center Physicians

This extraordinary program already has attracted nationally renowned physicians who see the Center as a forward thinking place to practice. These physicians include members of the Ashikari Breast Center, including Drs. Roy and Andrew Ashikari and Dr. Pond Kelemen. Their ties to research and past service to Memorial Sloan Kettering and Mount Sinai Medical Center have long positioned them as leaders in their field. Members of the New York Group for Plastic Surgery, Drs. C. Andrew Salzberg and R. Michael Koch – who specialize in microsurgery and breast reconstruction as well as the full range of cosmetic surgery – have joined with the Ashikari team for a full service, surgical program.

Also part of our Cancer Center Team are distinguished oncologists and radiation oncologists such as Dr. Asim Aijaz of Westchester Oncology and Hematology and Dr. Chika Madu of Hudson Valley Radiation Oncology Services. Consulting physicians such as oncologist Dr. Jeffrey Ambinder of Hudson Valley Hematology and Oncology Associates, add a level of expertise and familiarity with the community.

Different Treatments, One Center

The Comprehensive Cancer Center follows guidelines from the National Comprehensive Cancer Network and practices evidence-based medicine to determine which combination and sequencing of the three major therapies — surgery, radiation and chemotherapy — is best suited for each patient’s unique circumstance. Those decisions are made in collaborative conferences called tumor board discussions, where every specialist who has or could have bearing on the patient’s case is involved.

Maintaining an ongoing conversation with the patient’s primary care provider is also greatly valued by the Center’s care team, not only to ensure the patient can easily access treatment for general concerns and conditions, but also to assist. the specialists in tailoring therapies based on the detailed information that can only come from a long-term medical relationship.
