Hudson Valley Hospital Center Prepared for Sandy

Cortlandt Manor, NY - (October 29, 2012)– Hudson Valley Hospital Center is prepared for Hurricane Sandy with roughly 80 employees planning to spend the night at the Hospital.

High winds and flooding from Sandy hit our area this morning with the worst of the storm expected to arrive late Monday through Tuesday.

“We feel confident that we are as prepared as we can be for the storm,'' said Hudson Valley Hospital Center Hospital President John Federspiel. “I commend our staff for the great work they have done in preparation and for braving the elements to make sure that we are here for the community if need be."

Federspiel said that the Hospital’s backup generators have been tested and disaster preparedness plans have been reviewed. The hospital’s ER is fully staffed and prepared for any emergency. The Hospital’s Wagner Conference Room and other areas will be set up as makeshift dormitories for employees who are staying the night due to the storm. As of Monday afternoon, about 80 staff members were expected to spend the night.

Justin Costable, EMS Coordinator and Emergency Management Director at HVHC, added that the hospital is prepared with extra supplies of food and water and has gone over evacuation and triage procedures with staff. The Hospital has also coordinated with other hospitals and EMS agencies on bed capacity in case HVHC needs to take in evacuated patients from other hospitals.  All facilities and their systems have been checked to assure their ability to weather the storm.

The City of Peekskill has an emergency shelter set up at Peekskill High School at 1072 Elm Street and the the Town of Cortlandt has an emergency shelter set up at the Muriel Morabito Community Center at 29 Westbrook Drive.

Costable said that the Cortlandt shelter has power to allow people with their own CPAP devices and oxygen, but does not have staff to assist with the operation of the device. Also, the shelter accepts pets but owners must bring food and pets need to be in crates.

The Hospital’s Farmer’s Market will return on Tuesday November 20, the final market of the season and other hospital educational classes are expected to resume on Wednesday.
