Wound Care Expert Dr. Stephen Guthrie to Discuss Healing Benefits of Hyperbaric Treatments

Dr. Stephen Guthrie at Wound Care Institute

As a child our wounds seem to heal overnight. Not so for the many people who suffer with non-healing wounds caused by diabetes, poor circulation or injury.

Dr. Stephen Guthrie, M.D., Ph.D, Board Certified in Hyperbaric Medicine and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, will discuss how hyperbaric medicine can help people with non-healing wounds heal faster and return to a normal, active life.  The program will be held on Wednesday, August 17 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Wagner Conference Room at Hudson Valley Hospital Center, 1980 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor, NY.

“This is a growing area of medicine that is being used successfully to treat many conditions which have been unresponsive to other treatments,’’ said Guthrie, Director of Hudson Valley Hospital Center’s Institute for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine.

At the Institute for Wound Care, patients are placed in private hyperbaric chambers where they can watch TV or listen to music. The chamber’s oxygen enriched air dissolves in the blood and encourages the growth of new blood vessels, which promotes and accelerates the healing process.

Dr. Guthrie received his medical degree and his Ph.D in Physiology from the University of Wisconsin where he also completed his residencies in General Surgery and in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society. He has published dozens of papers in the field of wound care and plastic and reconstructive surgery.

More than 5 million Americans each year suffer from chronic non-healing wounds. Wounds may be caused by diabetes, poor circulation, traumatic injury, radiation therapy and other causes. At Hudson Valley Hospital Center’s Institute for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine, we help patients heal faster and return to a normal, active life. In the comfort of our two oversized hyperbaric chambers – the most advanced equipment in the region -  patients can relax, listen to music or watch a movie while super oxygenation speeds healing.
