Nurses Week focuses on nursing’s role in improving patient care

Cortlandt Manor, NY - (May 9, 2013) – More nurses are seeking advanced degrees and statistics show that patients are benefitting as a result.

At NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital this was evident as the hospital celebrated National Nurses Week with a program that highlighted nursing achievement and scholarship. Nurses spoke about how earning advanced degrees had improved their skills and described their participation in clinical projects aimed at improving patient care.

Kathy Webster, Vice President of Patient Services at NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital, said that studies showed that patient mortality rates and length of hospital stays dropped in direct correlation to the number of nurses with advanced degrees. She said that the Hospital encouraged its nursing staff to return to school, offering generous tuition reimbursement and accommodating more flexible schedules.

Quality and Innovation are definitely alive here at the hospital where our Magnet nurses continuously take the lead in driving initiatives aimed at improving care and service.   Recent awards speak to this commitment,’’ said Kathy Webster, Vice President of Patient Services at NewYork-Presbyterian/Hudson Valley Hospital.”

Seven of the Hospital’s nurses were among 20 from throughout the entire Hudson Valley honored May 8 as top nurses by Hudson Valley Magazine, she said.

Other presentations during the 90-minute program attended by physicians, nurses and administration in the Hospital’s Wagner Conference Room included:

  • Angela David, RN, BSN, presenting her Clinical Scholars project which investigated how improved mobility was key to keeping patients’ conditions from deteriorating in the hospital, particularly in the elderly.
  • Casey Forde, RN, BSN, Kathy Geany, RN and Lori Brennen, RN, WC, speaking on how their decision to seek advanced degrees had reinvigorated their nursing careers and benefitted patients.
  • The Magnet Nursing Ambassadors Committee presenting two $500 Scholarships to nursing students Nosazena Iyekegbe of Peekskill High School and Chantel Blyskal of Mahopac High School.

Also recognized were:

  • Maggie Adler, the hospital’s Associate Director of Quality and Standards, for earning the District 12 New York State Nurses Association Nursing Excellence Award in Clinical Practice.
  • Sherine Campbell, ACNM on the Hospital’s 3 south unit, for being named Author Exemplar for the NORMET region by the New York Organization of Nurse Executives for her submission on her journey from LPN to BSN.
  • The Nursing Staff of the Progressive Care Unit for winning the Hospital’s Kay MacNamara  PI Award, named in memory of the hospital’s, respected, long-time nursing administrator who died in 2011.
