Hudson Valley Hospital Center receives “Success Story Award” ® for Employee Satisfaction

Cortlandt Manor, NY - (November 19, 2012) – Hudson Valley Hospital Center was presented with the prestigious “Success Story Award”®by Press Ganey Associates Inc. at the organization’s 2012 National Conference on November 12-14 in Washington D.C.

The Press Ganey Success Story Award is a highly regarded symbol of achievement in the health care industry. Hudson Valley Hospital Center is one of 13 organizations to receive this honor in 2012, and one of only nine organizations to receive the award for satisfaction performance. Press Ganey partners with more than 10,000 health care facilities, including more than half of all U.S. hospitals, to measure and improve the patient experience.

Hudson Valley Hospital Center was specifically recognized for its ability to maintain employee satisfaction ratings above the 92nd percentile for the past six years.

“This is a tremendous honor, and a testament not only to the initiative of management, but to the teamwork of the entire hospital staff,’’ said Hudson Valley Hospital Center President John C. Federspiel. “The fact that our employees feel satisfaction in their work is not only important to the well being of this Hospital, but to the well being of our patients.’’

Nearly 2,000 health care leaders from across the country attended the three-day conference, “Transforming the Patient Experience,” to discuss, learn and share best practices on key health care issues. Among the speakers were Astronaut Mark Kelly, who spoke about leadership, and his wife former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who gave brief comments.

In their presentation to the convention, Hudson Valley Hospital Center Vice Presidents Debbie Neuendorf and Jeane Costella said the Hospital worked hard to keep employees engaged by including them in the decision making process, by encouraging civility and teamwork and by recognizing and rewarding excellence.  As a result, they said, turnover rate of the hospital’s nursing staff had dropped from 22 percent in 2000 to 6.6 percent this year. Overall employee turnover rate dropped from 26 percent to 8.6 percent. They said these factors were behind the Hospital’s top-notch care and its patient satisfaction ratings, which were in the top 7 percent nationwide in 2011.

“We applaud the accomplishments of all of these organizations, especially in an environment of increasing pressure to improve quality and enhance the patient experience, while reducing costs,’’ said Patrick T. Ryan,  Press Ganey CEO. “In addressing this challenge head on with passion, creativity and thoughtful commitment, they are leading the transformation of health care by example.”

This is Hudson Valley Hospital Center’s second “Success Story Award.”  The first was awarded in 2006 for a cultural sea change at the institution which drove employee satisfaction levels from the 28th percentile to the 97th percentile within six years. Since then the Hospital has maintained its high rating, remaining above the 92nd percentile in employee satisfaction each year, which was the basis of this year’s award.

Hudson Valley Hospital Center has also been cited by Westchester Magazine - as one of the top places to work in Westchester, and the nation, alongside corporate giants like MasterCard, New York Life and Morgan Stanley.
