Cortlandt Manor, NY - (February 28, 2012) – Lather up! Some of the 29 men from Hudson Valley Hospital Center who grew their beards this month to raise money for the Hospital’s Cancer Center lined up at the Quiet Man Public House in Peekskill to have their whiskers shaved.

More than 150 people attended the “Shave Off” at the “Beard Bash” on February 27 which marked the end of a month-long fundraiser for the Hospital’s Cheryl R. Lindenbaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. Doctors, male nurses, administrative staff and friends and relatives of Hospital staff volunteered to grow their beards out for the month of February to raise money for the Cancer Center.

The volunteers paid $50 each to enter the “Winter Whiskers” fundraising contest and recruited donors to sponsor them. In addition to the “shave off”, the evening event featured prizes for the Most Money Raised, Wildest Beard, Longest Beard, and Most Creative Fundraising Tactics.

“The Winter Whiskers fundraiser has created a fun buzz around the hospital,” said HVHC President, John Federspiel, who competed in the contest. “This type of campaign not only raises important funds that are needed but also awareness for the important services that the Cancer Center brings to the community.’’

The men began growing their beards on February 1 after submitting their entry fee and a photo of their clean shaven faces.

It’s not too late to contribute to the cause even if you didn’t grow you’re beard or sponsor one of the contestants. Visit to make an online donation. Donations can also be mailed to: The Foundation of Hudson Valley Hospital Center, 1980 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor, NY 10567. Checks should be made out to the Foundation of HVHC.

The Hospital has so far raised about $15,000 hopes from the “Winter Whiskers” event as part of a $5 million fundraising campaign to offset the cost of the Cancer Center, which opened on November 17.

Special thanks to The Quiet Man which generously donated the food for the evening while Depot Wine & Liquors added to the fun with a fabulous Bourbon Tasting. Michael Warde of Montana for men donated his services to shave the Winning Whiskers participants and Tim Murphy provided live tunes for the evening.
