Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Hudson Valley Hospital strives to stay on the cutting edge of technology. We recently made a significant upgrade to our MRI equipment to bring you the latest software, faster exams and clearer images. This advanced, non-invasive imaging technology is an excellent tool for diagnosing disease of the brain, spine, joints, chest, abdomen, pelvis and blood vessels without side effects or discomfort for the patient. The MRI upgrade includes new coils to better study the wrist, shoulder and other small joints, as well as a new technique vital to early stroke detection.
MRI Breast Imaging Coil
MRI scans may be an effective breast cancer-screening tool for certain women. A recent study shows that MRI was successful in detecting breast cancers that may have been undetected by mammography.
MRI breast imaging is a procedure, which uses a specially designed coil for the breast along with magnetic resonance imaging and a computer to detect cancerous and non-cancerous abnormalities.
An intravenous contrast agent (gadolinium) is injected into the patient. The radiologist can then determine if the abnormality is indeed cancerous. IV contrast is necessary for this exam, because it enables the radiologist to better visualize the cancerous growths, which will “light-up” when the patient has been given the IV contrast.
One advantage MRI has over mammography is that MRI creates a three-dimensional image of the breast without the use of radiation. A second advantage occurs in women with a history of breast cancer. MRI is an excellent method of detection of reoccurring cancer. For women with dense breast tissue MRI allows for better detection of lesions that may not be detected on standard mammograms. MRI of the breast, when used together with mammography and breast exam, can help improve breast cancer diagnosis. As a result, insurance coverage for cancer-related breast MRI has been generally favorable.
It should be noted that MRI Breast Imaging, is NOT to be used in place of a screening mammogram. Mammography is the FIRST standard of choice for breast imaging. MRI however, has become a very useful diagnostic test when used in conjunction with mammograms and ultrasound for the diagnosis of breast cancer.
If you have ever had any of the following: a positive mammogram, positive breast ultrasound, very dense breasts or a strong family history of breast cancer, talk to your doctor about MRI breast imaging. The optimal time to schedule an MRI breast-imaging exam is 7-10 days during a women’s menstrual cycle.
MRI
Our state-of-the-art MRI unit is a "flair" design which means it is more open and much more comfortable for the patient, while still maintaining the highest level of accuracy in pinpointing medical problems. It is situated in a totally separate, safe, beautifully decorated area that is self-contained within the Radiology Department. It features an oversized skylight which allows patients to enjoy the relaxing view of sky and clouds.
Open MRI
Hudson Valley Hospital Center understands that not everyone is created equal. Some of us are small, some are larger, and some are uncomfortable in small, confined spaces. The TOSHIBA "ULTRA" was designed with you, the patient in mind. Providing "High field" performance with the comfort on an OPEN design. We offer an OPEN MRI system with speed and accuracy like never seen before.
