Cardiac Rehabilitation
The John M. Zarcone
Cardio-Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center
The Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at Hudson Valley Hospital Center is designed for patients suffering with angina pectoris or who are recovering from open heart surgery, angioplasty, or a heart attack and need medically monitored exercise therapy.
Our program is based on an ongoing evaluation of the patient's cardiac condition as well as supervised exercise prescribed to restore and maintain cardiovascular functions.
Under the medical direction of a board certified cardiologist, an individual exercise program is developed for each patient. The cardiac rehabilitation team includes the physician, the Hospital nursing staff, nutritionist, exercise physiologist and other medical advisors for the duration of the treatment.
In addition to a monitored exercise program, patients and their families learn about heart disease, developing new eating habits, smoking cessation, medication, and stress management.
Located on the lower level of the Hospital's Wagner Pavilion, our patients find a state-of-the-art cardiac rehabilitation department utilizing the latest and most modern equipment in a warm and friendly environment.
PHASE I:
Rehabilitation begins as soon as your condition stabilizes in the hospital. At this time the Cardiac Rehab Staff will start the education process. You will learn about coronary artery disease and risk factors. Your physician may order supervised low-level exercise sessions.
PHASE II:
You will have an initial evaluation to assess your needs and we will help you set goals for your therapy. From your exercise study we will design an individual exercise program that is appropriate for you.
PHASE III:
Your program will last approximately 12 weeks with one educational session weekly. Your exercise sessions will include state of the art equipment including: treadmills, Airdyne stationary bikes, rowing machines, upper body cycle, and strength training equipment. During each session your heart rhythm, blood pressure and heart rate will be closely monitored.
As part of your program you will attend weekly educational classes that include:
- Understanding Coronary Artery Disease
- Cardiac Medications
- Stress Management / Relaxation
- Benefits of Exercise
- CAD Risk Factors (Coronary Artery Disease)
- Depression and Anger Management
- Nutrition
