Digestive Health Series at Hudson Valley Hospital kicks off with Colorectal Health

alt

Cortlandt Manor, NY - (March 4, 2013) – While most people over 50 are familiar with the need for a colonoscopy, not as many people have this lifesaving screening as should, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and to help educate the public on the importance of colon screenings. Hudson Valley Hospital Center will present a program on prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer as a first in a series of programs about digestive health.

Dr. Herman Kleinbaum, a gastroenterologist with the Hudson Valley Center for Digestive Health, will speak on prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer on Tuesday, March 19 at 6 p.m. at the hospital’s Center for Digestive Health, 1978 Crompond Road, Cortlandt Manor.

Among cancers that affect both men and women, colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Every year, about 140,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, and more than 50,000 people die from it. If everyone 50 and older received regular screenings, as many as 60 percent of deaths from this cancer could be avoided, according to the CDC.
